Nizam to be member of new Police Service Commission; Rowley not pleased

The government of Trinidad and Tobago is pleased with the list of names submitted to parliament by President George Maxwell Richards for appointment as members of a new Police service Commssion (PSC).

But Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley has serious concerns about the list and has formally written to the President on the matter. Richards had sent a list on June 25 for ratification by House of Representatives.

His nominees were:
  • Christopher Thomas
  • Seunath Jairam
  • Jeewan Singh
  • Kenneth Parker
  • Jacqueline Cheeseman
His new list includes:
  • former House speaker Nizam Mohammed
  • former Industrial Court judge Addison Khan
  • attorney Martin George
  • Kenneth Parker
  • Jacqueline Cheeseman
Acting Prime Minister Jack Warner confirmed to reporters Wednesday that Government had submitted the names of persons to form the Police Service Commission to the President. Its list had the names of Mohammed, George, Khan and Cheeseman.

The Trinidad Express reported Thursday that Rowley is upset because he says he was not consulted on the new list and did not know that the president had changed the original list.

"The new list came to my attention from the Parliament this afternoon, and I was sufficiently concerned that I immediately communicated with the President,' he told the paper.

"I spoke to him and I have since written to him, asking him to reconsider, and drawing to his attention my concerns surrounding this particular development." The term of office of the PSC expired on June 30.

Media reports have suggested that Mohammed would be the chair of the new PSC. But government sources have said that is premature speculation since the President appoints the PSC Chairman.
