Five top UDeCOTT managers suspended

Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar announced on Thursday night that five senior managers of UDeCOTT - the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago - are being suspended pending an investigation into their conduct as it relates to irregularities, overruns and mismanagement at the state organisation.

And on Friday, UDeCOTT Chairman Jearlan John handed the mangers their notices sending them on immediate suspension pending an inquiry. They will receive full pay during the investigation, which could take several months.

The Prime Minister made the announcement at a political meeting at Penal junction that attracted nearly 10,000 people.

Persad-Bissessar said the action against the managers is based on the preliminary findings of an inquiry commissioned by the Ministry of Justice.

The team, led by British QC Alan Newman, made the recommendastions based on its legal assessment of the findings of the report of the Uff enquiry into UDeCOTT and the construction sector.

The Prime Minister did not name the managers. However she stated their portfolios:
  • Chief Finance Officer - the person who determines who gets paid and when
  • Chief Construction Engineer - the person responsible for signing off on construction certificates
  • Executive Manager, Special Projects - the person who handles all private sector funding for UDeCOTT
  • Internal Auditor - the person who is responsible for ensuring that all UDeCOTT's processes and procedures are followed and to ensure compliance with rules and regulations
  • Corporate Secretary - the person who advises the board of UDeCOTT to ensure compliance in law of the rules, regulations and procedures of the company
