Canadian Gibbs nominated as T&T police commissioner

The government of Trinidad and Tobago on Friday presented a motion to the House of Representatives seeking to confirm the appointment of Canadian Dwayne Gibbs as the country's next Commissioner of Police (CoP).

Last week the House rejected another Canadian, Neal Parker, for the job over an presumed conflict of interest issue.

Gibbs is the second choice for the post.

While Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar agrees with the principle of having a national hold the top police post, she has said for now she must follow the law.

National Security Minister Brig. John Sandy agrees, although he would also like to see a national in the post. he said he is prepared to work with Gibbs.

"I will give...all the support necessary because as it stands now, we are facing a national crisis and need to get rid of what is burning our country and our citizens today,” he declared.

The Opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) won't support the motion to accept the nomination of Gibbs, but the government can pass it with the strong majority it has in the House.

The PNM abstained last week when the Parliament voted to accept Canadian Jack Ewatski as one of three Deputy Commissioners of Police. However the party voted with the government to appoint nationals, Stephen Williams and Maurice Piggott.
