"All of you are heroes", Warner tells supporters

Jack Warner pledged on Monday night to transform "every village, every community with our visionary leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar" and added that the victory in the Local Government Election (LGE) is the "dawn of a new era for Trinidad and Tobago.

The UNC Chairman observed that Balisier House - the headquarters of the People's National Movement (PNM) - is "in darkness tonight while there is light here with us." And he urged supporters to keep it that way by putting their shoulders to the wheel to help transform Trinidad and Tobago.

Warner thanked supporters who made the victory possible. "All of you are heroes," he told them and he particularly thanked two candidates - Christine Sobram and Felisha Isahak - for fighting a gallant fight against two adversaries to bring victory to the party. He also thanked Allison Thomas who did not win, but fought bravely against heavy odds.

He served notice that the next victory is going to be in Tobago. "Two down, one to go," he said.

Ashworth Jack, leader of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) reminded the new councillors that they are the servants of the people and they can be fired if they fail the people. "If you work hard," he said, "they will renew your contract."

Earlier, Food production Minister Vasant Bharath said, "We have truly taken back our country" and said the mammoth task of rebuilding is now beginning. "God is with us," he said.

And Housing minister Dr Roodal Moonilal called the victory a triumph for the Prime Minister. “It is confidence in her manner of governance...It is a vote for her leadership style, of her commitment to equality and inclusiveness. She has led by example.” Moonilal called Persad-Bissessar a leader of “compassion and commitment".
