Stage veteran Errol Jones dies at age 87

Veteran Trinidad and Tobago stage actor Errol Jones died Monday at the home of his niece in Cascade. He was 87.

Jones was well-known in the 70s and early 80s as the storyteller on radio who narrated the “Crick Crack” stories and the adventures of the fabled “Anansi” spider.

He had a distinguished career on stage that included his roles as Makak in Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott’s play "Dream on Monkey Mountain" and King Jab Jab in "King Arthur and His Merry Men, Joker of Seville".

Albert Le Veau, artistic director of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, said the death of Jones is "an enormous loss to everyone. He was our inspiration and strength for many years."

Actor Michael Cherrie told the Newsday newspaper Jones was a father figure to him and other young actors. "There are three or four generations grown in the theatre because of Errol...He had a generous sense of mentoring."
