Sandy to meet PSC to discuss appointment of police commissioner

The new government of Trinidad and Tobago is expected to make an early decision on the appointment of a Commissioner of Police (CoP).

Minister of National Security Brigadier John Sandy made the announcement Thursday during a visit to the Special Anti-Crime Unit (SAUTT) academy in Camp Cumuto.

Sandy told reporters he plans on meeting next week with the Police Service Commission (PSC) to discuss the appointment of a Commissioner of Police.

Acting Commissioner James Philbert's contract expires on June 14.

The previous government has not filled to top position since 2007.

Philbert was hired in an acting capacity after then Prime Minister Patrick Manning used his veto to black the appointment of Assistant Commissioner Stephen Williams, who was the PSC's number one choice for the post.

Manning used his veto after Williams refused manning's suggestion that he should turn down the appointment.

The new national security minister wants the status of SAUTT regularised.
Attorney General Anand Ramlogan is expected present a bill to Parliament that would legitimise SAUTT, almost five years after former national security minister Martin Joseph established the force.

Sandy also told reporters he plans to send military personnel to troubled schools to meet students and guide them away from getting involved in crime.

The minister noted that the schools have become the breeding grounds for gang-related crime and he said he plans to attack it at the source.
