Keith Rowley appears to be heading for a coronation as leader of the People's National Movement (PNM) on June 27 without a fight. That would make him the fourth leader of the party founded by Dr Eric Williams in 1956.
George Chambers became leader after Williams died in office in 1981; Patrick Manning took charge of the party in 1987 following the PNM's humiliating defeat in the 1986 general elections in which Chambers lost his seat.
The man who had been considering a run against Rowley - former works minister Colm Imbert - has pulled out. And former Arima MP Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, has said she is not interested in leadership "at this time" and prefers to focus on rebuilding the PNM.
Rowley offered her a carrot last week when he appointed her as leader of the opposition in the Senate.
Nominations for the leadership post close at noon on Wednesday and so far there is only one nominee.
The Trinidad Guardian reported Tuesday that Imbert refused to sign a consent form to contest the leadership.
Imbert told the Guardian he made the decion "for peace’s sake in the party."
The paper asked him if he would support Rowley for the leadership, but Imbert had a terse comment on that: "I’m just saying I’m not contesting."
