Rowley takes charge, rewards his supporters

Opposition Leader Keith Rowley is getting ready for Parliament with a team of Senators who are loyal to him.

Among them is Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, who will lead the opposition in the Senate. Former PNM leader Patrick Manning rejected her twice for selection in the 2010 general election.

Manning told her to step aside in Arima in preference to Laurel Lezama-Lee Singh, who lost the seat to the opposition. He also rejected her bid to represent La Horquetta/Talparo, which the PNM also lost.

Former cabinet minister and ex-Laventille MP Fitzgerald Hinds will return to the political limelight as well. Manning rejected him in the 2007 general election. Hinds has always supported Rowley and had warned that the PNM would lose the May 24 election.

Other PNM senators are Attorneys Faris Al-Rawi and Ted Roopnarine, economist Dr Lester Henry and Tobagonian Shamfa Cudjoe.

Al-Rawi, Roopnarine and Henry are all political rookies who come from political families. Al-Rawi's mother is Diane Seukeran, a former PNM San Fernando West MP. Roopnarine is the grandson of former political icon, Ashford Sinanan. And Henry is the son of PNM founding member Ferdie Ferreira.

Cudjoe worked as an analyst at the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

Rowley said he believes that he appointed the six best persons currently available to the PNM.

"We will support whatever is good for the people of Trinidad and Tobago and we will vigorously oppose what is inimical to the interest of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. And having said that and that being our guideline it will be for the Government to get the majority in the Upper House," Rowley said.
