Finance Minister Winston Dookeran is getting some help.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told reporters Wednesday due to the complexity of the work in the finance minister she is going to appoint another minister.
The Trinidad Express is speculating that the job will go to UWI economist Dr Patrick Watson, who led Dookeran's Economic Monitoring Team that reported during the election campaign on the economic situation in the country.
The Prime Minister also reiterated that she will move quickly to remove the Senior Citizens’ grant and to re-establish old aged pension, introduce a Procurement bill and kill the Property Tax Act.
The tax bill was passed in the previous Parliament and was supposed to take effect on January 1, 2010. However while it received presidential assent it was never proclaimed.
Persad-Bissessar acknowledged that the taxation system for properties needs to be reviewed but said her Government would honour its commitment to scrap the tax.
