Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar spend Monday in Tobago where he thanked the people for their support in the May 24 general election in which the people elected two members of the People's Partnership.
She joined Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) leader Ashworth Jack and UNC chairman Jack Warner in an island wide motorcade, which ended in Charlotteville.
Persad-Bissessar told reporters she was humbled by the outpouring of live from everyone.
"It means that our message resonated, that we must work side by side with Tobago, and I want to honour that pledge and promise that we have made to the people of Tobago, and Trinidad and Tobago," she said.
"I want to thank the people of Tobago, Tobago House of Assembly Minority Leader Ashworth Jack, our two Tobago Ministers, Minister of Tobago Development Vernella Alleyne Toppin, and Minister in the Ministry of Tourism Dr Delmon Baker, Jack Warner, and Winston ’Gypsy’ Peters, for accompanying us along the motorcade,’ Persad- Bissessar said.
Commenting on role of the two Tobago MPs in cabinet, the prime minister said the ’ two ministerial posts represent Tobago well for now but she can review that if necessary. She also promised more Tobago appointments to key positions.
She spoke of the future for Tobago. "I have seen the beauty of this land Tobago. We have to grow food in this land, we have to lift tourism, entertainment, and together we will work it and make it happen," she said.
Asked to comment on media reports that Wade Mark had gotten the nod for House Speaker, Persad-Bissessar said she cannot appoint a Speaker.
Parliamentary rules specify that a person who gets the support of a majority of MPs for the position will be appointed Speaker. That means the governing party can nominate Mark but the appointment is only confirmed after MPs vote on the matter.
