PM Kamla greets former Princes Town MP Subhas Panday, brother of UNC founder Basdeo Panday, during her market tour. Panday has been appointed a government senator.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told market vendors in Siparia Sunday she agrees that their market is run down and dilapidated and agreed that the community needs a new market.
Persad-Bissessar, who is also the Parliamentary representative for the area, made the comment after visiting vendors Sunday morning.
Reporters on the tour noted people complained about the lack of sanitary facilities, stating that several of them told the MP that they have to use nearby bushes as toilets.
Others spoke about the lack of running water.
Persad-Bissessar promised a new market but did not make a commitment on how soon nit will happen. "We can’t say how soon because we have budgeting to do. We have to identify funding," she said.
She told the vendors she has placed Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma in charge of the issue and that Sharma will meet with a group from the Siparia Regional Corporation to discuss the matter.
Sharma has already promised a new market for Marabella.
