Penny for PNM leader?

There are reports that former Arima MP Pennelope Beckles will lead the opposition in the Senate.

And there is support among some members of the Peiople's National Movement (PNM) to have her succeed Patrick Manning as political leader.

NEWSDAY cites sources as saying that Beckles, former attorney general Bridgid Annisette-George, former ministers Fitzgerald Hinds, Anthony Roberts, Christine Sahadeo and attorney Faris Al-Rawi will be the six opposition Senators.

Al-Rawi is the son of Diane Seukeran, former PNM San Fernando West MP.

Former PNM deputy leader and cabinet minister Ken Valley told the paper he is not interested in serving in Parliament right now because he wants to devote his time to rebuilding the party.

Top Manning allies Jerry Narace and Dr Lenny Saith are definietly not being considered, the paper reported.

Newsday said while Beckles has not publicly expressed any desire to lead the PNM some party members are lobbying for her because they believe she is the right person for the job.

PNM general secretary Martin Joseph told the paper all 41 PNM constituency executives are expcted to present nominees for political leader in about two weeks. The leadership convention is on June 27.
