Kamla tells supporters keep the campaign going

The leader of the United National Congress (UNC) danced with the people Saturday night and thanked them for their support during the historic May 24 general election.

And Kamla Persad-Bissessar urged party faithful to keep the election campaign spirit alive because another election is just weeks ahead.

The Prime Minister Kamla was speaking at a 'thank you' event at the party's Rienzi complex headquarters at which she expressed gratitude to supporters for electing the People's partnership government.

“Do not put away your party shirt; do not put away your party flag. We cannot allow anything to hold us back. Once again it is time to hit the campaign trail. Keep the campaign spirits going, we need your support in the coming five weeks,” Persad-Bissessar said.

She announced the long-overdue election at Friday's inaugural sitting of the 10th Parliament, fulfilling another one of her election promises. She told supporters the election will be about the issues that concern them.

She said Manning administration's failure to call the election three years in a row was an attack on the people and an affront to democracy. "We made it clear that once elected we will hold the long awaited local elections.

People must never be denied the right to vote.
You have the right to determine how you are governed,” she said.

"During our election campaign I came to you night and day pleading for your support. Over 450,000 persons voted for the People’s Partnership. We are committed to closing the gap between those who govern and those who are being governed," she pledged.
