COP's Desmond Allum dies

One of the Trinidad and Tobago lawyers who helped blow the whistle on UDeCOTT boss Calder Hart has died.

The Congress of the People (COP) announced Desmond Allum's passing, saying it is saddened to learn today of the passing of one of the country’s legal luminaries.

In his career, spanning four decades, Allum, a father of three, had served as a temporary High Court judge, a former president of the Bar Association and president of the Criminal Bar Association up to when he died.

He also headed the Trinity Chambers on Edward Street, Port of Spain.

Additionally, he served as a Member of Parliament for Port of Spain North under the People’s National Movement between the period December 1991 to October 1995.

"More recently, he served as a member of the COP’s Legal team which was responsible for drawing up a number of plans and proposals for dealing with Crime in Trinidad and Tobago, and played a pivotal role in exposing the UDECOTT and Calder Hart issue," COP said in a media release.

COP Political Leader Winston Dookeran said, “Desmond Allum was a true patriot. He led a life of service to the country. He will be sorely missed.”

The Finance Minister added, "Apart from his outstanding role in the legal profession he found the time to assist in social and community causes such as the Cotton Tree Foundation”.

Dookeran has joined the national community in mourning Allum and has extended deepest condolences to his family.
