Audits for Petrotrin, UTT; Parliament opens June 18

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has made another move to fulfill her People's Partnership campaign promises.

On Friday she announced that the cabinet has directed Attorney General Anand Ramlogan to take steps to get foreign auditors to conduct forensic audits into the state energy company, Petrotrin, and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).

She made the announcement at a news conference following a meeting of the cabinet.

"Petrotrin is experiencing severe financial difficulties brought on by high cost overrun of its refinery upgrade and the $12 billion lawsuit filed by New York based fuel producer World GTL Inc.," she told reporters.

"We are looking at allegations of malfeasance in Petrotrin’s gas optimisation process and poor decision making in its procurement practices," she added.

With regard to the university, she said, "The manner of sourcing professors, certification of students, accreditation of the university, bid rigging, and the approval and tendering process for contracts are some of the issues affecting UTT."

Persad-Bissessar also confirmed that Cabinet approved a proclamation to convene the 10th Parliament on Friday, June 18, 2010, at 1.30 p.m.
