Nothing to fear, we will fix crime problem: Joseph

Crime has become a number one issue in the May 24 general election campaign in Trinidad and Tobago and it took on greater significance Friday with the brutal slaughter of a pregnant young woman and a man in Laventille.

And the cabinet minister whose responsibility it is to deal with crime is promising that the Manning government will deal with the problem once it gets back into office.

National Security Minister Martin Joseph promised at a political meeting in Point Fortin that there will soon be a dramatic reduction in country’s crime rate.

Joseph said there are high levels of crime in the country because Trinidad and Tobago's location makes it is a major transshipment point for drugs that end up in Europe and North America.

He said his government has invested heavily in resources and the country now has the most number of "marine assets ever seen in its history" with three offshore patrol vessels to come.

"This Government...can give you the assurance that once that is done, you can see a dramatic reduction in the level of crime and violence that continues to plague this country even now as we speak...you have the assurance, it is not just ole talk," Joseph said.

He spoke about other resources including an upgraded police training academy and an expanded fleet of police vehicles to 1425.

"We recognise and admit that crime is the number one issue. Those opposed to us want to make it the only issue, over the next two weeks they going to bombard you...

"They go say Manning must go because of crime. Tell them they must go because your Government is putting measures in place to deal with crime," Joseph declared.

"The war against illegal drugs and guns will continue...your PNM government will not waiver, will not flinch from these responsibilities."

I agree with Martin Joseph ---WE will fix crime problem.

WE shall so fix beginning May 24th next.

Tell him and his cronies just wait and they'll see how WE shall do in six months what they could not in nine years.
