Kamlamania and deadlock - Ryan on T&T politics today

Selwyn Ryan: "As I looked around Mid-Centre Mall last Sunday and listened to what was being whispered, it occurred to me that we might well be on the cusp of a new historic dispensation.

"Kamlamania was everywhere. I had reason to wonder about the mechanics of charisma, how it emerges, how leaders become invested with it, since it is an interactive phenomenon...
"What we seem to be witnessing now is another attempt to recreate the 1986 one-love coalition which was led by ANR Robinson.

"This version is led by Mrs Bissessar who has sensed that she is the chosen vessel through which this ’wind of change’ sentiment for more and better governance is seeking to emerge.

"Charismatic leaders emerge in times of trouble when the society or large blocs of it collectively feel the need to destroy the old and create the new...


"So far, it seems as though, notwithstanding enormous challenges, the people know what they want- unity at all costs, and are forcing the leadership to ’genuflect’. One, however, waits to see for how long, ambitions, which are a feature of democratic politics, are contained.
