Kamla skips Grande meeting, will be on TV Sunday night

Kamla Persad-Bissessar cancelled all her afternoon and evening engagements Saturday to attend a “security meeting.”

The UNC leader's media relations officer Ingrid Ishmael told JYOTI about the security matter to clarify a statement made by Jack Warner Saturday explaining why Persad-Bissessar did not attend the People's Partnership meeting in Sangre Grande.

The UNC Chairman apologised for his leader's absence stating that she was unable to attend because she was dealing with domestic matters.

Ishmael said Warner did not want to alarm supporters by disclosing the exact nature of the "domestic" issue.

She explained that following the news conference at the Office of the Opposition Leader Saturday Persad-Bissessar met with officials from security firms and security experts at her to get advice on “upgrading security for her self, her family and her entourage” for the next few days ahead of the May 24 general election.

Ishmael said security for Persad-Bissessar's family has become a very "personal matter" for the UNC leader following the alleged $5 million threat on her life and Thursday's hijacking of her niece and driver in her SUV.

Persad-Bissessar's niece, Lisa Harry, is very close to the UNC leader and both of them remain highly traumatised as a result of Thursday's incident, Ishmael stated.

Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert has stated that he has assigned police service to deal with security at political meetings and rallies. He has also promised a high police presence on election day.

The Trinidad Guardian has said Persad Bissessar will appear on its television network CNC3 at 9 pm Sunday. The broadcats would be available online at the Guardian's, election website
