543 teachers fired on eve of election

The Service Commissions Department has fired 543 teachers from schools across Trinidad and Tobago.

A report in NEWSDAY says the department sent letters advising the teachers that they would be out of work from July 2, 2010.

The paper said the news came as a shock. "Some of the teachers fainted while others cried as they read their letters given to them by their respective principals,” the paper quoted one teacher as saying.

Some of the teachers are single parents with no other financial support, the paper reported.

The paper said several teachers told the paper that they have received their teaching degrees from the University of the West Indies and were expecting to hired as full-time teachers after completing two years as Assistant Teachers.

“If we had known that our tenure of employment was temporary then we would never have accepted it in the first place. We were duped by our employer,” a teacher told the paper.

The President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) confirmed the dismissals. Rouston Job also confirmed that ministry of education had promised to hire the teachers and had given them a guarantee of employment.

Job said a meeting has been scheduled with ministry officials next Tuesday, the day after elections, to try to resolve the matter.
