Panday warns people might form new party if leaders fail to unite

Basdeo Panday is hinting that there could be a third political party in opposition to the governing People's National Movement (PNM).

But the ex-UNC leader was adamant that he is not saying he would form such a movement or even be involved in it.

The former leader of the United National Congress (UNC) made the comments in an interview with the Trinidad Guardian.

The paper spoke with Panday about opposition unity, which Panday was unable to achieve during his tenure as leader of the UNC.

He explained that people could be pushed into seeking an alternative if opposition leaders "contine to be spiteful and agonise enough people."

He said that could lead the agonised people to form a new political party, which he said "would defeat the entire process of unity.”

He said the unity process will fail if leaders are not genuine about getting together. The former prime minister suggested that opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her Congress of the party (COP) counterpart, Winston Dookeran, must engage in meaningful discussions to engage the ruling PNM in a one-on-one election battle.

Persad-Bissessar and Dookeran have already agreed in principle on this but they are yet to work out the details of how the parties would do it.

The UNC leader said earlier this week she is determined to make sure the unity process works, noting that Dookeran is equally committed.

So what is doing doing these days?

Panday told the Guardian, "I now have the time to do a lot of the things I always wanted to do and I am enjoying my life.”

The former prime minister sounded like he is in retirement, telling the paper he is studying literature, listening to music and reading. In addition, he said he is resuming work on his autobiography.
