The screening committee of the People's National Movement (PNM) faced some tense moments Saturday when the Mayaro executive walked out of party headquarters.
The group left Balisier House after the committee decided not to accept nominee Clifford Campbell, one of two candidates who have been selected for the seat. The committee asked the executive to present other nominees next Tuesday.
The other nominee is Alderman Arvin Moonan who did not appear before the screening committee because he is out of the country.
The executive felt that PNM political leader Patrick manning was being unfair and was insensitive to their wishes to have Campbell nominated as the candidate for the seat, which is currently held by the UNC's Winston "Gypsy" Peters.
They have said they will bring back Campbell on Tuesday.
The executive claimed that Manning favours another person, who was not nominated and some members were so angry they vowed to vote for the UNC if they don't get their chosen candidate to represent them.
Manning denied that his favoured candidate for Mayaro is Deborah Thomas Felix, chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He said, "I am not seeking anybody. The political leader is chairman of the screening committee. I screen whoever comes before me."
