The leader of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) political leader has served notice that his party will beat the People’s National Movement (PNM) in the general election.
Ashworth Jack made the comment over the weekend after a meeting in Tobago with the leader of the United National Congress (UNC), Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who led a UNC delegation that worked out a deal with Jack and his TOP.
Under the agreement TOP alone would contest the election in the two Tobago seats against the incumbent PNM.
Speaking with the media, Jack said the TOP will "shock the nation" and beat the PNM in Tobago.
He said, “The PNM in Tobago has been the most incompetent people that have been in government,” Jack told the Guardian newspaper.
He added, “The TOP has always been fighting the PNM. This is nothing new to us. We have always been fighting the PNM, because they have done nothing to deliver. We believe that Tobago deserves a lot better.
“I am quite sure that we will shock this nation. There is corruption in every corner, inclusive of Tobago, and they think that people are not going to be fed up of that?”
Jack told the paper TOP would conclude its nomination process this week. The PNM MPs in the last Parliament were Stanford Callender and Rennie Dumas.
Callender is not running again but Dumas is seeking re-election.
