CAL-Air Jamaica deal postponed to April 30

The handover of Air Jamaica to Caribbean Airlines (CAL) has now been postponed from Monday to April 30.

Air Jamiaca chairman Dennis Lalor issued a media release this week stating that the extension is to allow sufficient time to complete the negotiations which will result in the merging of the Air Jamaica and Caribbean Airlines route networks.

Lalor said this would create "a larger, stronger Caribbean airline to serve the region." He added that the extension would also ensure "a seamless launch of the operations into the transition period."

During the transition period, which is expected to last about 12 months, Air Jamaica will continue to operate its routes with its current fleet of aircraft and accompanying regulatory authorisations.

The airline also hopes to keep many of its employees under an interim agreement with CAL.

Air Jamaica's President and CEO, Bruce Nobles, has assured passengers all reservations made previously and tickets purchased on Air Jamaica will continue to be honoured. In addition all 7th Heaven frequent flyer benefits will continue.

"In simple terms, our customers and stakeholders will not see any visible difference in the airline, or its services, during the initial transition period as Jamaicans, visitors, shippers and travel partners can continue to book on Air Jamaica with confidence," Nobles said.

He added that as CAL absorbs the routes the combined network will provide significant added value and benefits to customers and partners.

The Trinidad and Tobago government has said CAL is only taking over profitable routes from the Jamaican carrier and that under the agreement with the airline it will be not be putting in any cash.
