Report: Manning meeting with Syrian-Lebanese businessmen

A report on national television in Trinidad and Tobago Thursday stated that Prime Minister Patrick Manning plans to hold a private meeting Friday with members of the Syrian/ Lebanese community.

The report on TV6 said UDeCOTT's chair, Jearlean John, arranged the meeting at Manning's request.

It follows Tuesday's successful meeting with key members of the community and opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

In a speech to the Downtown Owners and Merchants Associaton (DOMA), the UNC leader blamed the Manning regime for the poor state of affairs in the country and invited the merchants to join her political fight.

Reports state the businessmen have been very impressed with Persad-Bissessar and some of them have offered to meet privately to discuss how they could be of assistance in the fight against the current administration.

The businessmen control the majority of businesses in Port of Spain and who have been long-standing financiers of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM).

The TV6 reported said Manning's eagerness to meet with the group is because of the positive response the business leaders gave to Persad-Bissessar.
