Ousted Senator Rahman resigns from UNC

Panday loyalist, M.F. Rahman, has resigned from the United National Congress (UNC).

On Monday UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced a new Senate team, which did not include Rahman, who was appointed by Panday.

The Senator had been a vocal supporter of Panday.

In his letter to the UNC leader dated March 1, 2010, Rahman said, "In the present circumstances, I can find neither justification nor virtue in continuing my membership in the UNC and consequently hereby tender my resignation from the Party."

Rahman became a UNC member only after his appointment to the Senate although he had always been a staunch supporter of the party. He said it has been an honour and a privilege to have served in the Senate.

He added, "Since there remains no meaningful role for me in the party, my best course of action is to revert to that of Independent Commentator, free to reflect unhindered on matters political in the National Interest.

"I shall continue as always to applaud good politics."
And in his first comment on the new team the ex-Senator congratulated Persad-Bissessar for retaining Wade Mark as a member of the Senate "despite the efforts of others to have him removed."
