Former UNC cabinet minister Jearlean John is the new chairman of UDeCOTT.
Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced the appointment Friday at a news conference.
However he said unlike her predecessor, Calder Hart, who quit one week ago, John would not be the organization's executive chairman.
Hart acted both as head of the management of UDeCOTT and its chairman. The change means there will be a separate chief executive officer or managing director.
John is currently the Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). In that position she is responsible for implementing the Government’s housing development program.
The self-described workaholic told reporters the UDeCOTT assignment "is just an additional duty." She also stated that her predecessor “did some good work”.
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar wished her former UNC Cabinet colleague the best in her new post but warned here that she would have "a lot of cleaning in those stables to do.”
Former Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj described John as “a very competent person, an honest woman and a person of integrity.” However, he stated that in order for John to be effective the government must first fire the rest of the UDeCOTT board of directors.
