Two former cabinet ministers from the Panday administration are urging all sitting opposition MPs to support the new UNC political leader, Kamla Persad-Bisssessar.
Gerry Yetming and Ganga Singh left the UNC in 2006 and became founding members of the Congress of the People (COP) that was led by former UNC leader Winston Dookeran.
COP was able to attract tens of thousands of voters who had previously supported the UNC but did not win a seat in that election while the UNC won 15.
Singh is still a member of the executive of the COP, but Yetming is no longer involved with COP in a leadership role.
They both admit that with the change in leadership many members of COP would be returning to the UNC but they are confident that COP would survive.
Commenting on developments in the UNC, Singh - who is a former opposition Chief Whip and MP for Caroni East - said Persad-Bissessar clearly demonstrated that she is in control when she moved swiftly to appoint Jack Warner as Chief Whip.
"If there was any dithering on her part, it would have been exploited by her political opponents," he told the Trinidad Express. "I think that she needed to demonstrate very quickly that she was in charge and by the appointment of Jack Warner, she sent that very clear message."
Singh predicted that Warner would do well despite his inexperience. "One thing about Jack Warner, he is an extremely hard worker and a quick study," he noted.
