Panday might fire UNC Oudit from the Senate "if it's important"

Opposition leader Basdeo Panday has not ruled out the dismissal of Senator Lyndira Oudit who opposed him in last month's internal election of the United National Congress (UNC) and won one of the three deputy leaders posts.

However Panday told the Newsday newspaper Monday he will only make such a move "if it becomes important".

Panday loyalists are not pleased with UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar's decision to fire the opposition Chief Whip last week and appoint Jack Warner to the position.

While the party in opposition controls the business of the House of Representatives, the person who holds the official post of opposition leader - in this case Panday - makes appointments the Senate.

This means Persad-Bisessar is powerless to make any Senate adjustments while Panday is opposition leader.

Panday told Newsday, “I haven’t given the matter any consideration...It depends on if it becomes important. One must have priorities as to what one does. You can’t do everything at the same time; you do those things that you believe to be important like looking after my constituency and office.”

Presently sir the priority would be to present a strong opposition, an alternative to the corrupt regime that is squandering our resources.
