Manning walks in Panday's territory in preparation for LGE

Prime Minister Patrick Manning walked the streets of Couva North Monday accompanied by tassa drumming as he continued his campaign to meet the people in the various constituencies.

Couva North is the seat that ex-Prime Minister Basdeo Panday has held since he entered the House of Representatives in 1976.

It was not the triumphant walkabout Manning expected, although the visit was well choreographed with PNM supporters dressed in the party's colours parading with the leader with banners proclaiming their support.

Manning heard a barrage of complaints from residents who told him about the lack of proper drainage, bad roads and an inefficient system of pipeborne water.

Manning didn't say much to the media, focusing instead on shaking hands with residents and kissing babies. He ended his walkabout with a cottage meeting at the Couva Anglican Primary School.

He told the Trinidad Guardian that the people should expect an election this year.

"What we said is the Local Government elections will come this year. The bodies expire in July and we have three months after that up to October. So somewhere before that we will have the elections,” Manning said during his walkabout.

Manning campaigned vigorously in 2007 to take Couva North, which is the jewel in the crown of the UNC. His novice candidate, Nal Ramsingh, made significant inroads there getting more than 5,000 votes with just over 4,000 going to the Congress of the People (COP) candidate, Hulsie Bhaggan.

Panday - who won 72 per cent of the popular vote in 2000 - held on to the seat with minority support.

Suddenly, the emporer has seen it fit to start kissing babies and walk from Toco to Icacos, I wish that the electorate would reject this type of politics. Walking around at election time does nothing to improve the lives of the people, what improves their lives is what is done once elected.
