Gopeesingh announced earlier in the day he would support Persad-Bissessar for the post of leader of the Opposition.
In his letter, the UNC Chairman called Gopeesingh's decision one "which indicates to all your commitment and service to the United National Congress and the myriad of supporters of this great party."
Warner acknowledged the difficulty Gopeesingh faced in making such a decision but noted that he knows that it was based "on the principles you have manifested throughout your stewardship...Critical to the party now is the need to unite all factions, and your decision has gone a long way in helping us to start the process."
Warner noted Gopeesingh's desire to assist in finding a suitable role for Panday in "this glorious party which he helped to establish" and declared "in this regard, we all stand on common ground."
He concluded, "Again, my friend many thanks and may God continue to strengthen our resolve and keep us all together as we seek to bridge the gaps and build a better nation for us and for our posterity."
