The wife of Prime Minister Patrick Manning has fired a private contractor attached to the Prime Minister’s residence for disobeying her orders, the Trinidad Express reported on Thursday.
The paper said it had to do with instructions given by Hazel Manning to conserve water.
It comes on the heels of the Express report that sprinklers were being used to water the lawn at the Prime Minister’s residence while a water curfew is in effect due to the extreme dry season that has caused the extraordinarily low water level in reservoirs.
The Prime Mnister spoke about the water affair in Parliament Wednesday.
"Mrs Manning, who normally sees about the management of the household, gave a very clear instruction to the head of the household, who received that instruction and duly transmitted the instruction to all the relevant personnel involved in the maintenance of the grounds."
He said the newspaper article in the Trinidad Express was "factual" but "came as a great surprise to us."
Manning added, "And while we are investigating what may have gone wrong, a decision has been taken to terminate the services of the contractor, with immediate effect, and to invite a State enterprise, the National Maintenance Training and Security Company Ltd, to come and provide those services to the Prime Minister’s residence and Diplomatic Centre."
