Partap walks out on Panday, joins Kamla

Cumoto Manzanilla MP Harry Party has broken ranks with the legislative arm of the United National Congress (UNC) and is now supporting Kamla Persad-Bissessar for leader of the party in Sunday's internal election.

Partap is one of 10 UNC members of Parliament and four UNC Senators who had signed a letter supporting Panday "unconditionally" for the post of leader. But he has changed his mind and is expected to speak on Persad-Bissessar's platform Friday in Penal.

There was speculation that Partap would cross over to the Siparia MP's side after she announced that Partap's son, Colin, would be running for the post of Policy and Strategy officer against the Panday team's Hamza Rafeeq.

Panday has maligned the younger Partap who works as an attorney in the office of the leader of the opposition. He said he hired Partap because "ah feel sorry for the fella" and had planned to fire him for "incompetence".

In making it official, Partap said at the time he signed that letter of endorsement the circumstances were different. He said having considered all things, he is now convinced that the UNC under Panday's leadership cannot win another election.

He said in his view the only person who can lead the UNC to viictory is Persad-Bissessar.
