Panday warns of death of UNC if Kamla is leader

The leader of the United National Congress (UNC) says the party would die in six months if the membership elect Kamla Persad-Bissessar as leader in next Sunday's internal election.

Speaking at a political meeting to campaign for reelection Panday connected the Siparia MP to Jack Warner, saying they have a common slate and a common objective.

"If the Kamla-Jack slate wins the elections, the UNC will be dead in less than six months. When the UNC is no more, I ask you: who will defend you? Who will stand up and fight for you?" charged asked. He said the Congress of the People (COP) wants Persad-Bissessar to win because "they know they can swallow her and the UNC at the same time."

He added, "Why do you think Dookeran refuses to talk to Basdeo Panday about unity? He wants to talk to Kamla because he can’t swallow Panday. But he will chew up Kamla and spit her out, so they will talk to Kamla and when they finish it will have no UNC. UNC dead," he declared.

Oropouche MP Roodal Moonilal accused Persad-Bissessar of flip-flopping. "What we do? There was no dispute, no fight. What happen? How do you explain this dramatic flip and somersault from November to December? Were you conspiring?" he asked.
