Panday on the attack, says Jack and Kamla are a team

Basdeo Panday launched another vicious attack on his opponents Tuesday evening as he spoke at a political in support of his candidacy for the leadership of the United National Congress (UNC).

In presenting his team of candidates for the party's national executive in the January 24 internal election, Panday derided his opponents as he read the resumes of each member of his own team, often refusing to acknowledge the training and qualifications of opponents such as Dr Fuad Khan, Dr Rupert Griffith and Jack Warner among others.

Panday is facing a challenge from Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Tabaquite MP Ramesh L. Maharaj but it was Persad-Bissessar he went after, reiterating his assertion that she has "a weakness" that makes her unfit to lead the party.

Panday said he never called the Siparia MP a drunk, saying that it was Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner who made that charge against her.

Panday connected her to Warner's campaign. Warner is running for the post of Chairman and he has insisted that he is running an independent campaign and has fielded no candidates.

The UNC leader urged UNC members not to be fooled by that and pointed out that Warner is just putting up a front.

Panday said Warner and Persad-Bissessar are a team and accused them of planning dissolve the UNC and hand it over to the Congress of the People (COP).

Focusing on Warner, Panday argued that Warner has not offered a single reason to show why he should be elected chairman ahead of the Panday candidate, Vasant Bharath.

Panday said in the four years that the Chaguanas MP has been a member of the UNC, Warner contributed nothing to the UNC. He said on the contrary, Warner has had financial benefits from the party, once again accusing him to failing to account for large sums of money which he allegedly received on behalf of the party.

Panday said neither Warner nor Persad-Bissessar was there at the birth of the party and cannot appreciate "the labour pains" that gave birth to the UNC in Aranguez in 1989.
