Basdeo Panday heads into Penal Friday night to launch his campaign for re-election as leader of the United National Congress (UNC). He has promised to unveil his slate of candidates for the January 24 vote. Observers say launching the campaign in Penal is a frontal attack on his number one opponent, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Penal is in the heart of the Siparia MPs constituency and they say launching the campaign there means Panday sees her as a real threat. But Panday has dismissed that, saying Penal junction is a favourite UNC meeting spot.
The party usually hold important mass events in Chaguanas and Aranguez, where the party was founded in October 1989.
On Friday night, Persad-Bissessar is keeping her distance from Panday. She is heading out to St Helena junction in the Caroni East constituency, held by Dr Tim Gopeesingh.
On Saturday, Jack Warner launches his campaign for chairmanship of the party at a rally in Felicity. Warner is currently one of three deputy leaders of the party.
