Obit: Pandit Karamchandra Dinanath Dubay

Trinidad and Tobago Hindus are mourning the death of a religious and cultural icon, Pandit Karamchandra Dinanath Dubay of Sangre Grande. Pandit Dubay, father of seven, died peacefully at his home Sunday after battling intestinal cancer. He was 71.

He was a very well known and respected priest in the community and a member of the Hindu body, the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, holding the position of Dharma Ratna.

He was also a Hindu prison minister and administered the last rites to convicted killer Dole Chadee.
Pandit Dubay was a composer and writer. His major audio works in religion are:
  • Ram Bharat Milap (released 2009) - A compilation of Ramayan verses with bhajans
  • A cassette in 1995 cassette to commemorate 150 yrs of Indian arrival in Trinidad. This contained Ramayan verses of Goswami Tulsidas, with accompanying booklet
  • Shanti Kirtan: A 10-year (1971-1981) Divali commemoration to Hindu leader Bhadase Sagan
Pandit Dubay is mourned by hundreds of chelas in Trinidad and Tobago and in Miami, New York, Toronto and other areas of North America. He was married twice.

Three of his children - Rajendra, Dharmendra and Babita - were from his first marriage to Sahodra Parasram. The four other children - Ambika, Chandridev and twins Shiksha and
Diksha - were from his second marriage to Lilouti Singh.

He had seven grandchildren: Kajol Dubay, Ritu Dubay, Sonu Dubay, Prashant Dubay, Keshavi Ramkissoon, Sohana Ramkissoon and Ishana Ramkissoon.
Pandit Dubay's funeral takes place Wednesday afternoon from his home in Sangre Grande to the cremation site on the banks of the Caroni River.
