NACTA suggests Panday is winning UNC leadership race

New York-based pollster Vishnu Bisram told the Trinidad Express Thursday Basdeo Panday remains in the lead for the internal election of the United National Congress (UNC) taking place on january 24.

Bisram's North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) is currently polling popular support for the three candidates.

Bisram told the paper the numbers have not been fluctuating.

"In terms of actual support, Panday is ahead with Kamla and Ramesh closely behind. In terms of support, among women entitled to vote...Kamla is polling 30 per cent with 27 per cent for Panday and 22 per cent for Ramesh with a six per cent margin of error suggesting a statistical tie," Bisram told the paper.

However, he said Persad Bissessar is trailing Panday and tied with Maharaj.

"Panday is particularly liked among older and middle aged ’traditional’ women," Bisram said. "Kamla’s support is among the younger age groups.

"And Ramesh’s support is among those who feel he is the right person to transform the UNC into an electable party as well as to combat the major social ills of society such as crime and corruption," he said.

On crime, Bisram said Maharaj is well ahead of all three with 68 per cent support as opposed to 20 per cent for Panday and five per cent for Persad Bissessar.

Many commentators have dismissed polls by Bisram, who rarely gives any indication of specific methodology. Panday has always said Bisram's results depend on who is paying the bills.

Bisram was the only pollster in 2007 to call the election right. On the eve of the vote, his polls suggested a majority for the PNM, no seats for the Congress of the People (COP) and 15 or 16 seats for the UNC.

The UNC won 15 of the 41 seats; the PNM won the other 26.
