One day after the internal election of the United National Congress (UNC), Prime Minister Patrick manning will launch his own election campaign with a walkabout in Arima.
Manning is planning a series of house-to-house meetings with individuals to gauge support for local government elections which are due later this year.
Officials of the People's National Movement say he will end his walkabout with a cottage meeting in Malabar.
They say he was supposed to launch his campaign a week ago but had to put it off because he had to deal with issues related to the devastation in Haiti.
Manning has also put off a walkabout that was scheduled for the Laventille area. Critics have challenged him to go to Laventille alone, without his security detail to see if he has any real support in the community.
Manning's name has popped up over and over again during the UNC election campaign with candidates opposed to UNC leader Basdeo Panday saying Panday and Manning have deal to make sure that Panday remains leader so Manning could win the next general election.
Panday has dismissed that as unfounded. Manning has not commented on the UNC election except to say he is watching carefully and would decide his next political moves after the election.
Earlier this week Government House Leader Colm Imbert said in picong in Parliament that he wants the Panday slate to win.
