Education officer Dr Daphne Phillips-Gaskin spoke on the Siparia MP's platform Wednesday night at a cottage meeting at the Macaulay Community Centre in Claxton Bay.
While she praised UNC leader Basdeo Panday she said she had to switch loyalties because her leader has lost his political attractiveness.
She told supporters she respects and honours Panday but given the current national situation she had no choice but to support Persad-Bissessar.
She said it cannot be business as usual with blind loyalty to Panday.
"I have to make the transition and I must place my support behind that person who has the experience, the knowledge, the wisdom, the history, the charisma, the training, the leadership and the greatest potential at this time to take our party and our country out of the morass that faces us," she said.
"There is, therefore, no option for me. I must unreservedly and publicly endorse and support our candidate for political leader of the UNC, Mrs Kamla Persad Bissessar, because our party and our country are at great risk at this time,’ she added.
Phillips-Gaskin said Panday has not asked her to defend the position.
Like Persad-Bissessar, she was a cabinet minister in the UNC administration. She acted as Prime Minister for two days in November 2000.
