UNC voter registrations close amid complaints

The United National Congress (UNC) closed its office early Friday, the final day for registrations for its January 24, 2010 internal elections, leaving many people in limbo as they tried to complete their regitrations.

Media reports in Port of Spain Friday night said many supporters of Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar complained that they showed up at two in the faternoon to hand in their UNC Membership application forms but were made to wait for hours outside the Office.

The reports said by five the office staff advised that the office was closed, leaving many people disappointed.

Persad-Bissessar was unavailable for comment.

She was in Parliament for the critical debate on the new property tax, which the government has insisted on passing by the end of Friday's sitting.

The government says it doesn't need any opposition support to pass the measure since the bill needs only a simple majority.
Once it passes the House it moves to the senate where it is expected to get approved since the governing party has a majority there as well.

The unpopular tax will take effect on January 1, 2010.
