Ramesh to assign "national figure" to deal with problems of former sugar workers

Tabaquite MP Ramesh L. Maharaj told reporters Sunday The Trinidad and Tobago Civil Rights Association, which he leads, has been restructured to include former sugar workers.

And he said a "top national figure", whom he did not name, has been selected to deal with the problems that former Caroni (1975) Ltd employees face.

The former attorney general said that person, whose name he plans to reveal Monday night, would become the association's chief executive officer and he would assign three officers to each constituency to assist the former workers.

Maharaj also expressed disappointment with Friday's confrontation between police and protesters who were demonstrating outside the Red House in Port of Spain.

The People's Democracy event was organized to protest the proposed property tax.

Riot police moved in and "manhandled" some of the protesters and charged prominent trade unionist David Abdullah with obstruction.

Abdullah is due in court on Monday to answer the charge.

People's Democracy plans to reconvene its demonstration outside Parliament Monday when MPs are expected to resume debate on the tax bill.
