Tabaquite MP Ramesh L. Maharaj has given Prime Minister Patrick Manning an ultimatum on behalf of former sugar workers.
In a letter to manning the former attorney general told Manning he has seven days to respond to a letter outlining concerns of the former employees of Caroni (1975) Limited with respect to lands that were promised to them as part of a separation package when the manning government shut down the sugar company.
Speaking to supporters in his campaign for the leadership of the United National Congress (UNC) Maharaj said if there is no response he would take legal action against Manning.
The letter dated December 17, 2009, is signed by Maharaj in his role as president of the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Rights Association.
He reminded Manning of a High Court Action in which Justice Lennox Deyalsingh ordered the government to honour its legal commitments to the workers wit respect to residential and agricultural plots of land with all proper infrastructure.
Government has been dragging its feet on the issue despite the court order that had a deadline of June 30, 2008.
It is now offering to distribute 1,500 plots and is asking the former sugar workers to pay between $20,000 and $30,000 in fees.
Maharaj has promised to take legal action to get the government to refund the fees.
