The year 2009 is fast closing its doors tightly behind us and with hesitant optimism we face the dawn of 2010.
The global village is still dominated by war and discontent; hunger and deprivation; intolerance and divisiveness and a huge disconnect between the wealthy and poor.
Locally, we are plagued with the arrogance of a failed government; corruption in the citadels of power; social demise littering our national landscape; neglect of the citizens who are hurting and in pain and a wanton waste of the national treasury.
It is against this background that I say with hesitant optimism that we face the dawn of 2010.
However, I am one who refuses to lose hope and in this regard I wish you a happy New Year, one in which as a nation we will face less hardships; a New Year that will usher in a more mellow political environment where the vengeance which persistently exists will be replaced with a more amenable approach that suggests that the leaders care about the needs of the people.
My wish for you in the New Year is one that stems the flow of blood on the nation’s highways and reins in the galloping crime rate which is threatening to go beyond our reach.
One in which the youths of our nation will begin to value the importance of a sound education and one where the parents step up to the plate by not only guiding them towards that end but nurturing the environment for such a success.
My fellow citizens as we face this New Year, let us approach it with a sense of civility and let us be sober, reaching back to the moorings which provided premise of the promise for a great nation in our motto of discipline, production and tolerance, 2010 holds great promise.
Hope is rising and the sun has not set upon us.
As a result of this hope I can, even with hesitant optimism be assured that we will do well in 2010.
Happy New Year to one and all and may God continue in spite of our frailties to bless this wonderful nation and each and every one of us.
God bless you and a happy and prosperous New Year.
