Joey's dad died when he was just 2 weeks old. His mom, a cane cutter, had to raise five kids on her meagre income. Unlike the other kids in the neighbourhood, little Joey had no bike.
Hundreds of people from the neighbourhood in the Couva North Constituency where Joey lives petitioned Warner, asking him to give the child the bike. When the MP heard about it from Sunil Ramjitsingh, the coordinator for the constituency, he responded and got Joey the very special Christmas gift.
That was only part of the Christmas gesture by Warner. He also gave out a little more than 3000 toys to kids and some 50 hampers to adults. It was his way of saying Merry Christmas to those in need.
"I know it made a difference in the lives of all of the recipients, even though temporarily," Warner said in an email to JYOTI in response to our querry about whether he handed only one gift.
