Changes at UNC headquarters raise questions about internal vote

Prospective candidates for the internal elections of United National Congress (UNC) and their supporters are concerned about changes that have taken place at the party's headquarters in Couva.

Sources say Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh, the Manager of UNC Headquarters at the Rienzi Complex, has been relieved of certain critical duties as the party prepares for the January 24, 2010 election.

Ramadharsingh has also been performing the roles of acting general secretary and has been handling a wide variety of party matters.

The sources say
Ramadharsingh has been replaced by Pamela Ramsingh, a niece of Oma Panday and a former employee of DesalCoTT.

Ramsingh is the person who will now be dealing with registration of members for the election. The party has set Dec. 18 as the closing date for new registration.

There have been complaints of a shortage of forms and sources say Ramsingh is unfairly rationing the forms, with some people being turned away without any registration forms.

UNC leader Basdeo Panday is facing a challenge for the first time in the history of the party. So far only Tabaquite MP Ramesh L. Maharaj has declared that he would run against Panday.

There is speculation that Siparia MP Kamla Persad Bissessar will also be challenging Panday for the leadership.

UNC deputy leader Jack Warner has announced that he is contesting the post of party chairman. But he has also expressed deep concerns about how the elections are being conducted and has charged that Panday is planning fraud to steal the election.

Panday has dismissed the charges, saying Warner and others who are complaining are doing so because they are looking for an excuse upfront to justify their defeat.
