Kamla walks with COP

One week ago a delegate at a United National Congress (UNC) gathering in Couva asked UNC leader Basdeo Panday to step aside and hand the leadership to Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The point the delegate made was that the former attorney general and deputy political leader is good for the party and that she stands a good chance of beating the People's National Movement in a general election.

Persad-Bissessar heads a committee of the UNC that is trying to unite all the political groups in the country.

On Saturday she was on that mission as she joined Congress of the People (COP) deputy leader Prakash Ramadhar in a "Unity in Action" meeting in Penal to protest the new property tax that takes effect on January 1.

She said her presence at the meeting was not about politics but about the lives of ordinary people whose lives would be adversely affected a tax which she said would push the cost of living higher and further deteriorate the quality of life.
