Former cabinet minister Keith Rowley says halting of the Uff Commission of Enquiry is a national disgrace and proof that ,UDeCOTT is "a runaway horse".
He called the UDeCOTT affair "nothing short of a scandal", especially since Attorney General John Jeremie had assured Parliament that the state organization would not move to stop the inquiry.
"It is inconceivable that a state enterprise, with the public as its shareholders, could defy the Attorney General," the Diego Martin West MP told the Trinidad Guardian.
He said the question that the country must ask is, "Where does UDeCOTT get its power from to defy the Attorney General and the President?
He told the paper, "This matter now falls squarely in the lap of Prime Minister Patrick Manning, who has been making a career of defending UDeCOTT."
Former UDeCOTT commissioner Israel Khan is "very disappointed" that lawyers for both sides agreed to put the commission on hold pending a court hearing in February 2010. He suggested if the court rules in UDeCOTT's favour, the report would be null and void.
He also suggested that UDeCOTT would lose in the court but at the same time he said if that happens the matter could go to the Appeal Court and then the Privy Council in a legal process that would take years to resolve.
