In a message Monday the former Prime Minister said, "Achievements like this exemplify a commitment to excellence, which could easily promote fellowship among our nation’s youths and the important role of sport in healthy living and in social and personal development."
He added, "Despite problems encountered by the captain of the team and the many tribulations associated with sponsorship of such a dynamic squad you have showed our nation that in adversity, good things are still possible.
"Sport most definitely can be used as a means to an end as our country grapples with the rigid problems faced by youths, which include crime, engaging in illegal substances, mental health problems and unemployment," he said.
He said he is immensely proud of the team, which he said showed great character, strength and determination. "This is an extraordinary feat by a team of young men who have showed us their strong spirit of competition in true professional style," Panday said.
