Another view of Islamic dress code

JYOTI asked Trinidad and Tobago Senator M.F. Rahman for his view on the controversial Muslim wear. His response is printed below:

"Islam promulgates modesty in dress and recognizes the female form as foremost in allure for men.

The forms of dress for women are optional so long as the body contours are not revealed to strangers.

Basically, when in public a woman should cover herself with a loose outer garment so that her natural gender appeal is not flaunted.

The head covering is similarly recommended for the preservation of modesty.

However, the Quran admonishes at Sura 24, Verse 23 (24:23) that it is not permitted to slander chaste believing women who may be careless. Thus, carelessness does not negate faith or chastity.

And later in the same Sura at Verse 60, (24:60), elderly women are explicitly relieved of the use of strict outer garments.

The Quran only makes optional the strict dress code for elderly women who have lost hope of marriage.

What the Quran does not promote is covering of the face which is entirely traditional and dangerous in today’s world.

It would be unjust to prohibit Muslim women from dressing as their religion requires. I am at a loss to understand the position of the Canadian Muslim Congress as you have reported."
