On this day, Muslims, reflect on and endeavour for peace and moral victory. It is a celebration which marks the end of Ramadan, which itself represents a period of charity, clemency and brotherhood.
It is a joyous occasion which carries important religious significance; a celebration of the achievement of enhanced piety. It is a day of brotherhood, moral victory and forgiveness.
Muslims commemorate not only the end of fasting but also give thanks to God for the self control and discipline observed during the fasting period.
Eid ul Fitr comes at a time when our country is in desperate need of strong guidance and leadership.
Crime remains the greatest challenge. The state of the economy has placed thousands below the poverty line but the State continues its ‘big project’ approach to governance.
The message of Eid therefore takes on a special meaning and significance for both Muslims and non-Muslims. Their prayer must be used as our prayer to guide us as a nation.
We must use their prayer to rescue us from the ‘hard times’.
I extend my sincerest best wishes to my Muslim brothers and sisters in Chaguanas West and the wider community.
All of Trinidad and Tobago must use the time for camaraderie and sharing.
My hope is that the message of Eid-ul-Fitr will resonate throughout our country and engender greater harmony, love and understanding amongst all our people who make up rainbow Trinidad and Tobago.
